Iskwe Mino Yawagamik is the new women’s shelter built by Sapotawayak Cree Nation. There are 7 rooms of varying sizes, built to accommodate families of every size.
Support for domestic violence survivors is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it provides a safe space for individuals to share their experiences and feelings, which is essential for emotional healing. Survivors often face stigma and isolation, and having a supportive network can help them feel understood and validated. Secondly, support services can offer practical assistance, such as legal advice, housing options, and financial resources, empowering survivors to regain control over their lives. Additionally, community awareness and education about domestic violence can foster a culture of empathy and action, encouraging more individuals to seek help and stand against abuse. Ultimately, robust support systems are vital in helping survivors rebuild their lives, restore their sense of self-worth, and break the cycle of violence.
Here at our shelter, we provide many services, some of which include:
- Safe accommodations, 24/7 availability, support for long-term stability, and assistance with finding permanent housing.
- Individual counseling and group counselling will be available once a week, guidance on restraining orders, support with custody and divorce proceedings.
- Budgeting workshops, job readiness training, educational workshops, and collaboration with local organizations.
- Individualized safety plans, emergency response protocols and safe space for every resident.
There are also safe spaces for children, including the outdoor playground and an indoor playroom for families to utilize. We hope to bring in programs like arts and crafts, as well as educational games and activities. A cultural component will be integrated into most of the available programs. We will be making use of the environment around the shelter as much as possible, to keep people out in nature to feel the healing aura of mother earth. Learning skills like gardening and fishing to help expand skills.
Indoor skills like cooking and cleaning will also be offered. We have a fully operational kitchen, laundry room and many staff eager to teach!
Our staff will be trained in mental health first aid, as well as standard first aid and suicide prevention. Staff will also be informed of effective listening and empathetic responses.
Effective listening is a crucial skill that involves fully concentrating, understanding, responding, and remembering what is being said. It goes beyond merely hearing the words; it requires engagement and a genuine interest in the speaker’s message.
Empathetic responses are essential in fostering a supportive communication environment. They involve acknowledging the speaker’s feelings and perspectives, which can help build trust and rapport. An empathetic response might include phrases like, ‘I understand how you feel,’ or ‘That sounds really challenging.’ By validating the speaker’s emotions, you create a safe space for open dialogue, encouraging deeper connections and understanding
